Lichfield & Erasmus Darwin House and Garden

Wednesday 20th August

Today we head to heart of Staffordshire, the historic city of Lichfield. On arrival we will have free time to explore and enjoy lunch, as well as visiting any attractions such as the magnificent Cathedral.

This afternoon we have a tour of Erasmus Darwins House, a hidden gem  museum, situated close to the Cathedral.

Erasmus Darwin was Charles Darwin’s grandfather.

A highly-regarded doctor, George III asked him to be his physician, but Erasmus declined. He was a critically-acclaimed poet, ahead-of-his-time inventor and dedicated botanist. Erasmus brought tremendous enthusiasm and intelligence to all his multifarious pursuits.

As a leading light of the Lunar Society his close friends and associates included Josiah Wedgwood, Matthew Boulton and James Watt, as well as the philosopher and statesman Benjamin Franklin and artist Joseph Wright.

We will enjoy a tea or coffee with biscuits before heading home.
