CBSO Rachmaninov and Shostakovich at Birmingham Symphony Hall at 2:15pm
Alexander Vedernikov Conductor Sunwook Kim Piano
Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 3, 44′
Shostakovich Symphony No. 11 (The Year 1905), 60′
War, protest, and a nation on the brink: officially, Shostakovich based his massive 11th Symphony on the events of 1905, but this blockbuster of a symphony is still grippingly relevant today.
Alexander Vedernikov – formerly of the Bolshoi – will bring out all its drama; and romance, too, as pianist Sunwook Kim tackles Rachmaninov’s Third Concerto, the piece they call the “Everest of piano concertos”.
